INTRODUCTORY GEOLOGY MOVIES
Limestone and water.mov This movie briefly shows the introductory student to the effect of water on limestone. Features related to weathering and dissolution, Karst,  groundwater are depicted. There is narration. The movie is 2:36.
Glacial features and sediments.mov This movie features video clips of different glacial deposits and features chiefly from PA. It's a short film (2:45)...enjoy!
Horizontal stream velocity.mov This movie features a class that learned about horizontal stream velocity by dropping a dye from a bridge into Penn's Creek. It may be useful for helping students visualize elements of flow. It's very short- 24 secs...it should download from dial-up connections in less than 2 mins.
Centralia - the mine fire.mov Want to see a movie on a mine fire that has been burning for the last 40-odd years? The fire caused an entire town to relocate and has cost the state tens of millions of dollars. This movie shows the effects of the fire at the surface,  describes the geology controlling it's movement, and described the effects of the fire on the local bedrock. It's approximately 7 mins. long, is narrated, and has some wicked music in the background.
Sediment movement along a coast.mov Need to explain longshore drift or sediment movement in a barrier island setting? This film shows longshore drift,  groins and other structures, and dune sand and dunes as barriers from storm energy. The movie was filmed at Sandy Hook, NJ and shows different structures needed to prevent beach erosion. It is 4:50 long.
SEDIMENTOLOGY MOVIES
Some controls on carbonate sedimentation.mov This movie demonstrates some of the different controls acting on carbonate sedimentation from localities in the Caribbean. It compares the effects of different elements such as ocean currents, terrigenous sediment, topography and the types of organisms found in both the Bahamas and Trinidad on carbonate production. It is not an all encompassing film; instructors showing it may wish to have a discussion on the factors controlling carbonate sedimentation that are not depicted. It is 6:35 long.
The ooid shoal.mov Here is a movie that will help budding sedimentologists better understand the environment where ooid sands form. The footage from this video was collected in the Bahamas and features a brief description of trace fossils from the Miami Ooilite by Dr. Paul Enos. Show your students what ooids look like in the environments where they form and then show them what they may look like in the rock record. This film is ~11 min in duration.
Reef sediments and rock.mov What do reefs look like in modern seas? What do they look like in the rock record? Have your students check out this movie on the reef environment and its sediments.  They will see how uniformitarianism can be used to better understand this environment. This movie is 7:48 in duration.
Carbonate shelf sands.mov This movie is meant to show the sedimentology student what the carbonate shelf/ramp is like and some of its sediments. It's a relatively short movie from the coast of Florida (near white bank). Because of a strong wind blowing over the shelf, the water is a bit turbulent, so expect a rocky ride! This movie is 3:30 in duration.
