Welcome to the Regatta PLANNING web page
Welcome to the Master's of the Susquehanna Regatta planning website.

Race
Name?
The Masters of the Susquehanna-
This name is two-fold. Firstly, our regatta will host mostly
masters-category (27yrs old and older) rowers. Secondly, we want to see
just who is/are the masters of their domain (the river). We plan
on inviting clubs and individuals
to compete who have some connection to the Susquehanna River Watershed
(see picture to the right). These
include clubs from Binghamton to the Chesapeake Bay. We want to start a
rivalry on the Susquehanna that will bring folks back year after year.
Binghamton, Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Bloomsburg/Danville, Lewisburg, Williamsport, Selinsgrove, Harrisburg, Chesapeake....
Some of the clubs we will invite include:
Yale
Old Fellows Rowing Association
Oneonta
NY
Hiawatha
Island Boat Club
Owego
NY
Central
Pennsylvania Rowing Association
Shamokin Dam PA
Susquehanna
Rowing Association
Harrisburg
PA
Penn
State Crew (Alumni)
University
Park PA
Wilkes University Crew Club
Wilkes Barre
PA
Beaver County Rowing Association
Altoona

Annapolis
Rowing Club

MD
...and others
Race date-
August 18, 2007-
Mark your calendars! It's the Saturday after the dam is supposed to be
lowered. It's a ONE day event (possibly 2 days); our thoughts are to keep this first
regatta simple. This date will ensure that large motor boats are off the water. It also is the same weekend as the SUNBURY RIVER FESTIVAL.

Race course-
We
didn't determine the length of the course at our meeting but we
will use the boat house as a base of operations and will likely race
downstream (see green arrow on picture to the right). It's likely we
will have 3 to 4 racing lanes and these lanes will hug the Shamokin Dam
side of the river. It's also likely that teh race will be less than 2500 m long...
Regatta Highlights:
Instead
of just being a rowing race, we want to make our regatta to be special.
We want it to be an event that will bring people back year after
year which means applying for grant money year after year.
One of the challenges of the tourism grant money is to bring people
here to spend the night locally. We need to be successful at
doing this and we need to be able to show the granting agency that we
are successful....So here are a few highlights that will hopefully help
us reach our goal.
- rowing races (starting early in the morning)
- tub races
- talks about the history of Shikellamy Overlook/local history (Jim Charles)
- canal and logging history (Van Wagoner?)
- talks on geology (or boat building?) and river ecology (Jenn Elick and Jack Holt?)
- bon fire and pig roast (Bev)
- band at Skeeters or Tedds
